When one starts winning regularly in the casinos in Las Vegas, it is sometimes dubbed “a lucky streak.” Of course, the top gamblers are anything but lucky; they are well aware of the odds and when to be in or out. The Nevada Self Storage Association (NVSSA) has been on a winning streak of its own in recent years, with membership growing and new events adding to the scope of the NVSSA’s presentations. And it has come from anything but luck. Instead, hard work and great planning have been the elements contributing to the NVSSA’s success.

2015 has been a particularly good year for the NVSSA. It has included monthly networking breakfasts alternating between Las Vegas and Reno; a legislative fundraiser at the SSA Fall Conference and Trade Show in Las Vegas; and the upcoming Tri-State Conference in Laughlin, Nev., hosted by the NVSSA, California Self Storage Association (CSSA), and Arizona Self Storage Association (AZSSA).

Michelle Watson also finished a very successful stint as president of the NVSSA, passing the baton to Greg Welsh. But she has stayed on the NVSSA board to help with the organization of the Tri-States Conference.

“What a pleasure it has been to work with Nevada self-storage professionals and watch the NVSSA grow over the past few years,” says Watson. “The events we have added and the money we have raised to help legislative efforts have added a new vitality to the organization. I know that Greg is doing a tremendous job as the NVSSA’s new leader.”

The 2015 year started with a new slate of networking breakfasts. Organized late in 2014, the breakfast gatherings began in January of 2015 and immediately were a hit. The themes for the breakfasts in Las Vegas and Reno included how policies and procedures benefit a self-storage establishment, UL safety standards in access control, efficient marketing strategies, benefits of tenant insurance, self-storage software essentials, charity storage, and round table discussions.

The networking breakfasts also benefitted greatly from sponsorships of companies such as Chateau Products, Janis International, PTI Security Systems, U-Haul, and Storsmart Insurance. The 2016 networking breakfasts are being organized now, so any companies interested in coming on board as sponsors should contact NVSSA secretary/treasurer Shelby Beck at (530) 566-2558 or Shelby@extra-selfstorage.com.

“Our goal was to have presentations that would educate NVSSA members about upcoming storage trends, ways to make their facilities more successful and efficient, allow them a chance to meet vendors, see the latest products and, of course, to network,” adds Watson. “We think we succeeded on all counts.”

Then there is the always important realm of legislation. The money raised in past years has helped bring about favorable results from the Nevada legislature such as SB150 and AB182. The 6th Annual Legislative Action Fundraiser was at the SSA September gathering in Las Vegas, and the NVSSA would like to thank all the members who attended and supported the event. Prizes were donated by sponsors including Extra Self-Storage, StorageOne, CDS Moving Equipment, U-Haul, Best Storage of Las Vegas, Golden State Storage, and Watson Self Storage.

“As the host state association for the yearly SSA national event in Las Vegas, we have seen our status grow,” says Watson. “Being able to piggyback an event like that with a major legislative fundraiser is so important to our being able to effectively work with the Nevada legislature to bring about positive results for the self-storage industry in our state.”

Finally, there is the upcoming 2nd Annual Tri-State Conference on Oct. 15 and 16 in Laughlin at the Golden Nugget. Watson has been working with Erin King of the CSSA, Anne Mari Coster of the AZSSA, and Poppy Behrens of the Mini-Storage Messenger to bring the three state associations together for the special gathering that had a tremendous start in 2014.

This year’s Tri-State Conference has a top-notch lineup of speakers including keynote speaker Marc Boorstein, Connie Kadansky, Sue Haviland, and Jeffrey Greenberger. It will feature two receptions and endless networking possibilities. And it also has impressive support from sponsors such as Mini-Storage Messenger, MiniCo, StorageTreasures.com, Open Tech Alliance, PTI Security Systems, Baja Construction Inc., Chateau Products, U-Haul Self Storage, SiteLink, Accent Building Restoration Inc., and Morgan Pavement.

“I am so pleased and honored to be a part of the team that created and organized the Tri-State Conference,” Watson concludes. “It just shows what a smart and talented bunch of women can do in this industry. And I am especially honored to have been a part of the NVSSA’s growth over the past few years.”
